In just a few short weeks, we open Leighton for the 2016-17 school year! In preparing for my third year as this building’s principal, I continue to realize what an exciting time it is to be part of this very excellent school district. With all the changes taking place on the educational front, I also realize what a tremendous responsibility it is to take those students whom you have entrusted to us and guide them forward as learners.
We have been very busy since school ended in late May with planning, student placements, cleaning, attending staff development meetings, taking leadership classes, working on curriculum, providing sessions in the building for students across a wide range of abilities, offering independent reading and math opportunities through the internet, setting up future labs, and, in general, gearing up for school to open in early August. Each spring, we continue to wind down to wind up.
Our entire staff looks enthusiastically forward to the entrance of over 600 students across the three grades for this year. We are a school community that takes great pride in what we have accomplished - to this point. What makes us different, however, is that we do not believe we have completed our task. It is our goal at Leighton and across the district to continue on the path set before us – to guide all of our students toward a successful educational experience that will allow them to move toward the next level, fully prepared and with great confidence. It is also our goal, through the efforts of this staff and students, to add to the accomplishments already achieved.
As we continue to partner in this learning environment, please know that we want to provide your students with the best possible chance for success. We want your children who are entrusted into our care to also enjoy this environment and to not see learning as a task to be avoided. We also want the very best education to be provided with the recognition that it takes all three parts (teachers, parents and students) of the process working together to make this happen. Help us help you to help them make this possible. With the continued support of this school community and the continued efforts of all of our stakeholders, we are confident that we can and will accomplish those goals.
We look forward to a great 2016-17 school year!
Paul Goodwin, Leighton School Principal
