H1N1 INFLUENZA IMMUNIZATION SECOND DOSE CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 12, 2010

The Portage County Health Department, in conjunction with the Aurora City Schools, will be conducting the second H1N1 Influenza immunization clinic on January 12, 2010. This clinic is the follow-up clinic to the H1N1 vaccination clinic that was conducted at the Aurora City Schools on December 1, 2009. This clinic is scheduled ONLY for those students nine years old and under, that have already received the first dose of the vaccination.
These vaccinations are voluntary and will again be FREE to students.   This follow-up vaccination is strongly recommended for those students nine years old and younger that received the first vaccination. Children nine years old and younger need two doses for full protection against the H1N1 virus. According to Sandy Petti, Aurora Schools’ Head Nurse, students nine years old and younger must receive the second vaccine in order to “achieve the fullest amount of immunity protection against the virus.” This second dose of vaccine completes the series of two vaccinations that are needed for students nine and younger.   This vaccine will only be administered in the shot form.
The Portage County Health Department will be conducting the clinics and administering the vaccines at Miller, Craddock and Leighton Elementary Schools.
Information, along with a new parental permission form, regarding the clinic will be sent home in book bags with those students who are eligible to receive the second dose on Thursday, January 7, 2010. Please look for these in book bags on Thursday, January 7 or Friday, January 8, 2010. We have a link below where you can also print a copy of the H1N1 second dose vaccination parent permission form. As noted on the consent form, you must include when the first dose was given. The first clinic was given at the Aurora City Schools on December 1, 2009. Parents that want to have their student receive the second vaccine must return the completed permission form to school by January 12, 2010.
If you have any questions regarding this H1N1 Influenza clinic for the second dose of vaccine, please contact your school nurse or the Aurora School Board office.

Once again, each of the schools in the Aurora City School District has been instrumental in spreading holiday cheer to families in need this holiday season. Support for these various giving projects has been immense! The many generous families and organizations of our community have shown an outpouring of time and donations to help make this possible. Some of these projects include:
Aurora High School
A collection has been established for new hats and gloves for children. These donations will be accepted until December 22, 2009. A box has also been set-up by the office for any Coats for Kids donations.
Harmon Middle School
The Coats for Kids holiday project is accepting donations for gently used coats, hooded sweatshirts, and sweatshirts that are needed to help keep children warm this winter. Donations will be accepted until December 21, 2009.
Leighton Elementary School
The Leighton 2009 annual Flurry of Gifts campaign has now ended. All of the many wonderful gift donations will be distributed to children and senior citizens in Portage County by the Salvation Army.  The Leighton students and staff were able to provide about 25% of the approximately 1,000 children in need in Portage County with contributions! We appreciate all of the work The Leighton Leaders and the Salvation Army has done to make this a success! Please see the Leighton school webpage photo gallery for a flurry of pictures!
Craddock/Miller Elementary School
The staff Caring for Children – Giving Tree at Craddock and Miller Schools will make the holidays that much brighter for the 22 families (54 children) that will be receiving the tremendous contributions from staff and administration members and various individuals, community businesses and organizations that can be found listed on Ms. Mazzella’s School Counselor webpage.  You can also view pictures of these contributions on the webpage.
We are very proud of the tremendous effort and generous contributions that have been given by all those involved in the many ways our schools have found to make a difference in our community!
 Happy Holidays to All!

CRADDOCK STUDENTS HAVE GONE WILD!

Craddock School 1st and 2nd grade students have gone wild! There is a large display of student’s artwork revolving around the popular children’s book “Where The Wild Things Are” by author Maurice Sendak, located in the Craddock (ramp) hallway. This theme is running concurrently with the student’s specials classes, which include physical education, library, art and music. This book theme also coincided with the recent release of the movie with the same title.
The children have created fantastic replicas of characters from the book to display along the hallway in the “Wild Forest”. Please take the time to enjoy their works while you are at Craddock. The wild “rumpus” should continue to be displayed through the Thanksgiving break. You can “click for more” below for a link that will allow you to view a video that the specials department has created highlighting the many ways students used their creativity and imagination.

AURORA CITY SCHOOLS H1N1 INFLUENZA VIRUS IMMUNIZATIONS
October 8, 2009
Dear Parents,
The Aurora City School District has been working closely over the past several weeks with the Portage County Health Department regarding the H1N1 influenza (flu) virus. We are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and well-being of our students here in Aurora. By being proactive we hope to minimize the impact this virus will have on our schools and community.
Working in conjunction with the Aurora City School District, the Portage County Health Department will be offering H1N1 vaccinations for our students. These vaccinations will be offered to children in grades K-12 and will be administered at your child’s school. Children in preschool and day care settings will be handled differently and we will relay information regarding them as it becomes available. The vaccine will be FREE to any parent wanting their child to receive it at school. The vaccine is only available as a shot and will not be administered in the nasal mist form.
While these vaccinations are by no means required or mandatory, they are highly recommended. It is important to have your child immunized because most people have no prior exposure to the H1N1 virus and; therefore, have not built up any previous immunity.  By having the student population vaccinated, the likelihood of significant outbreaks should be decreased.
These H1N1 school clinics are currently being planned for the end of October or the beginning of November. Children 10 years old and under will require two shots. The second dose of vaccine should be available at the schools after winter break in January. A letter will be sent home with a parent permission form when the school clinic information has been finalized.
We encourage you to take the opportunity to have your child immunized through the Portage County Health Department at your child’s school. We have attached a copy of the Portage County Health Department letter below. If you have any questions, please visit our H1N1 information link on the Aurora City School District website or contact your school nurse. We hope everyone will have a healthy winter!

AURORA CITY SCHOOLS LICE INFORMATION

At the beginning of every school year there are inevitably some cases of children contracting lice. The vast majority of these reported cases in our schools were children that had infestations over the summer months. While there are no more cases reported so far this year than most years, it has come to our attention that some parents have lice concerns.
Our lice policies are consistent with those recommendations of the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) and the School Health Association (SHA). We take many precautions to protect our children from contracting lice. Some of these precautions include:
·         Not permitting the sharing of art smocks in art classes or pinnies in physical education classes
·         Children that are found to have contracted lice are checked by the school nurse before returning to school
·         Investigating possible causes of children contracting lice, if more than one case of lice is confirmed in a classroom
·         Checking all children in a classroom by a school nurse if several cases of lice are confirmed in that classroom
·         The extra cleaning of affected classrooms
·         Adding a lice website link to the Aurora City Schools website to help parents find information in order to recognize and treat lice
Please notify the school nurse in the event that your child does contract lice. It is very important that these cases are reported in order for us to effectively monitor and control the spread of lice. Contracting head lice is not a sign of uncleanliness, lice actually prefer clean hair to better adhere to it. All reported cases are dealt with in a strictly confidential manner. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please feel free to contact our school nurse, Sandra Petti.

AHS BAND TO ACCOMPANY GRAMMY WINNER AT NFL HALL OF FAME GAME AUG. 9
The Aurora High School band will accompany critically-acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning singer Sam Moore at the half-time performance of the NFL Hall of Fame's 50th Anniversary celebration in Canton on August 9.

The band's surprise invitation to accompany the legendary singer came at the end of the school year, and band director Josh Perez says he and his students are both thrilled and honored to perform not only at the Hall of Fame game, but with a singer of Moore's stature.

Moore, whose hits include the legendary “Soul Man,”  was inducted into Cleveland’s Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and earned the “Living Legends” Award.   Moore told Hall of Fame game organizers it had been his life-long dream to be accompanied by a high school band.

On August 9, the Aurora High School band will fulfill that dream and a dream of their own, when they join Moore before a huge halftime crowd at the spectacular NFL Hall of Fame game.
