Aurora Solo Competition

Friday, March 10, 2017 at Harmon Middle School Band Room

Registration deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 28th (see below for online registration)

The Aurora Orchestra Association (AOA, orchestra booster group) will once again be hosting the Aurora Solo Competition.  This competition is open to all orchestra students (string players) in grades 6-12.  Mr. Nabring will run a seperate event for grades 4-5.  Please see him for more details.  This event is designed to provide students with opportunity to grow as a musician, receive helpful comments from an outside professional musician and prepare for participating in OMEA Solo and Ensemble events when they get older.

Each student will be asked to perform a scale from the following list:

         6th grade – D, G, and C major scales

                                            Violins – G Major, Two octave – all others one octave

                                            Cello/Viola – D and C Major, two octave – all others one octave

         7th/8th grade – D, G, C, F (All two octaves except F Major scale)


    HS Concert Orchestra -Violin -  C, G, D, A, B flat, E flat (2 octaves) - F (1 octave)

                                                 Viola - C, G, D, F, E flat (2 octaves) - A, B flat (1 octave)

                                                 Cello / Bass - C, G, D, A, F, B flat, E flat - (all 1 octave)


HS Philharmonic Orchestra - Everyone  C, G, D, A, E, F, B flat, E flat, A flat (all 2 octaves)

every participating student will recieve a rating of 1-4 (see below).  Students who earn a rating of 1 or 2 will be recognized at our awards night.   In addition, the top three performers from each grade level will receive a trophy and will have their name engraved on a plaque that will remain at their school.

       I                        Rating I – An Outstanding performance, with very few technical errors and exemplifying a truly musical expression.
      II                       Rating II – An Excellent performance in many respects, but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor
                                                defects in performance.
     III                       Rating III – A Good performance, but not outstanding. Showing accomplishment and marked promise, but lacking one or more essential qualities.
     IV                       Rating IV – A Poor performance showing many technical errors, poor intonation musical interpretation.

Each student will need to bring a copy of their music for the judge.  Don't forget to number each measure of the Judge's copy.
