SUMMER BOARD OFFICE/SCHOOL BUILDING OFFICE HOURS

The Aurora City Schools are currently operating on a summer schedule in order to conserve energy wherever possible. The following hours for each school building will be in effect until the 2016-17 school year begins in August.

School Board Office ~ Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Closed on Friday’s beginning June 10 – July 29, 2016.  If registration is needed on a Friday the Board Office is closed, please call 330-954-2137 to make arrangements.

Aurora High School ~ Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Harmon Middle School ~ Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

CABLE 9 GRADUATION CEREMONY AIRING SCHEDULE

Cable 9 would like to congratulate the 2016 Aurora High School graduates and their families.  Cabe 9 will air the commencement ceremony throughout the month of June and cap it off with a bonus marathon during the July 4th holiday weekend.  The schedule will be as follows:

June

Sundays:      June 5, 12, 19 & 26 @ 8:00 pm

Saturdays:    June 11, 18, 25 @ 1:00 pm

Graduation Marathon July 4th Weekend:  July 1-4 Aurora, Nordonia and Twinsburg graduations will air consecutively all weekend long on Time Warner Cable channel 15. Check for specific air dates and times at Cable9.org, “Schedule.”

NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR

The Portage County Health Department has released the new vaccine requirements that might affect your child. 

Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year:

All students entering the 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine (also known as MCV4, Menveo or Menactra) in addition to one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, diptheria, and acellular pertussis).

All students entering the 12th grade will be required to have a 2nd dose of meningococcal vaccine prior to entry. If the first dose of MCV4 was administered on or after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.

Nurses from the Portage County Health Department will be at Miller School during Kindergarten Registration (March 8, 2016) and will administer immunizations to any student under the age of 18.

AURORA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT’S 2016-17 SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS (Pre-K-8) AVAILABLE ON-LINE

School supply lists for the 2016-17 school year are available on-line for students in grades Preschool - 8.

There is no school supply list for Aurora High School students.   Each teacher will inform their students as to what materials they will need for class at either new student orientation or the first day of class. It is recommended that all high school students come prepared with basic school supplies, such as spiral notebook paper, folders, pencils, and pens, on the first day of school and the calculator that corresponds with the math class they are taking.  (Integrated Math 1 BLOCK or Integrated Math 1- Graphic Calculator TI 83+ or TI 84+ (TI 89 is not recommended). 

To find your student's supply list, go to the Aurora Schools’ website homepage and then go to either the Parent Portal or Student Portal at the top of the page.  Scroll down to the School Supply Lists title to find each grade level listed and select.


AURORA BOYS’ GOLF PROGRAM GOLF OUTING ~ July 24, 2016

The Aurora Boys’ golf outing to benefit the AHS Boys Golf Program will include a day of golf, food and fun.  The four person scramble will take place at Raccoon Hills Golf Course in Kent on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.  The registration deadline is July 16, 2016.  Contact Aurora Varsity Head Coach David Munson with any questions at 330-425-1283.

GREENMEN STAMPEDE XC/TRAIL 5K & 1 MILE FUN RUN ~ July 31, 2016

Join us for the Greenmen Stampede XC/Trail 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run on July 31, 2016 at Sunny Lake Park in Aurora.  The net proceeds will benefit the Aurora City Schools Cross Country Program.  This 5k race does have a twist to it. You can either enter as an individual like any other 5k or you can create a same gender team of at least 5 members of any age group. The top 5 members will be scored just like a cross country team. Medals will be awarded to top individuals in age groups in the individual race OR the top male and female teams will be awarded in the team event

The team is hoping to raise enough money to provide two graduating seniors in memory of Tommy Dankelson and Jack Morrison.

The Aurora Schools’ Football program will host their annual mattress fundraiser on Saturday, July 30, 2016.  If you are in need of a NEW, name brand, high-quality mattress set (much higher quality and up to 50% below retail!), then come to Aurora High School from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  There will be brand new mattress sets with factory warranties on display to try and experts on hand to answer any questions.  Delivery is available.

CLEVELAND MAGAZINE RATES AURORA SCHOOLS AT #4 IN NORTHEAST OHIO

Cleveland Magazine has released its June 2016 annual Rating the Suburbs issue.  The 2016 edition analyzed 77 Northeast Ohio communities on several key components including, education, housing, safety, taxes and walkability.  The Aurora City School District was ranked at #4 for 2016 out of these 77 Northeast Ohio communities.  Congratulations to the Aurora School District for another excellent ranking. 


AHS EARNS ALL A AWARD FROM OHIO STATE BOE

Congratulations to Aurora High School for earning the Ohio Department of Education’s (ODE) 2015 All A Award.  This is the first annual distribution of the award by the ODE and recognizes schools that earned straight A’s on all of their applicable report card measures.  This places AHS in an elite group of schools that demonstrated high-quality teaching and leadership that result in high academic performance for all students.


DISTRICT DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM ~ Resources Available Here

The Aurora PTO sponsored Drug Awareness & Prevention Program that was held on May 3, 2016 featured guest speakers knowledgeable about the growing drug epidemic seen locally and throughout the nation.  As a part of this program, several pamphlets and informational sheets were made available to attendees, including a moving, first-hand story from a mother, Danielle Smoot, whose son became addicted to drugs.  You can find them linked below.

AHS SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS 2016 NATIONAL SILVER KEY & OHIO GOVERNOR'S YOUTH ART EXHIBITION RECIPIENTS

Congratulations to Sean Berrodin and Brian Caponi and their students as the AHS Art Department had yet another outstanding showing at the2016 Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Competition and the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition.  The Scholastic National Silver Key Award winners this year are Karlie Hirter and Rekha Bhupatiraju.

ROBOTICS ROBOBACON TEAM EARNS 1ST PLACE RESEARCH AWARD

Congratulations to Harmon School Robotics team RoboBacon for winning the 1st place research award for their aluminum saltcake project at the First Lego League International Invitational Tournament at the University of Arkansas.  The global competition featured 72 teams from 16 different countries.
