SUMMER BOARD OFFICE/SCHOOL BUILDING OFFICE HOURS

The Aurora City Schools are currently operating on a summer schedule in order to conserve energy wherever possible. The following hours for each school building will be in effect until the 2016-17 school year begins in August.

School Board Office ~ Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Closed on Friday’s beginning June 10 – July 29, 2016.  If registration is needed on a Friday the Board Office is closed, please call 330-954-2228 to make arrangements.

LEIGHTON SCHOOL NEW TO THE DISTRICT FAMILY ORIENTATION MEETING ~ Thursday, August 11, 2016

The Aurora Schools’ Football program will host their annual mattress fundraiser on Saturday, July 30, 2016.  If you are in need of a NEW, name brand, high-quality mattress set (much higher quality and up to 50% below retail!), then come to Aurora High School from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  There will be brand new mattress sets with factory warranties on display to try and experts on hand to answer any questions.  Delivery is available.

GREENMEN STAMPEDE XC/TRAIL 5K & 1 MILE FUN RUN ~ July 31, 2016

Join us for the Greenmen Stampede XC/Trail 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run on July 31, 2016 at Sunny Lake Park in Aurora.  The net proceeds will benefit the Aurora City Schools Cross Country Program.  This 5k race does have a twist to it. You can either enter as an individual like any other 5k or you can create a same gender team of at least 5 members of any age group. The top 5 members will be scored just like a cross country team. Medals will be awarded to top individuals in age groups in the individual race OR the top male and female teams will be awarded in the team event

The team is hoping to raise enough money to provide two graduating seniors in memory of Tommy Dankelson and Jack Morrison.

AURORA SCHOOLS’ PTO K-8 SCHOOL SUPPLY SALE FOR 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR

The Aurora Schools’ PTO is currently sponsoring the sale of prepackaged school supplies (Grades K-8) for the upcoming 2016-17 school year from School Tool Box. Orders can be placed online beginning May 1, 2016.   Orders can be customized, but prices may change if the order is customized.  The sale ends August 1, 2016 and orders ship within 10 days.

AURORA BAND CALENDAR SALE ~ Monday, August 1, 2016

The Aurora High School Band will be selling their CALENDAR OF EVENTS door-to-door on Monday, August 1, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.   Calendars are $10 each.  In addition, you can purchase the school calendar (an essential planning aid) after the door-to-door sales event ends at Mazzulo's Market in Aurora through the month of September.  Additionally, advance tickets for the Thunder Over Aurora Marching Band Show (September 10, 2016) will also be available at a pre-sale price of $5.00 (after August 1st, pre-sale ticket price is $6.00/$8.00 at door).

AURORA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT’S 2016-17 SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS (Pre-K-8) AVAILABLE ON-LINE

School supply lists for the 2016-17 school year are available on-line for students in grades Preschool - 8.

There is no school supply list for Aurora High School students.   Each teacher will inform their students as to what materials they will need for class at either new student orientation or the first day of class. It is recommended that all high school students come prepared with basic school supplies, such as spiral notebook paper, folders, pencils, and pens, on the first day of school and the calculator that corresponds with the math class they are taking.  (Integrated Math 1 BLOCK or Integrated Math 1- Graphic Calculator TI 83+ or TI 84+ (TI 89 is not recommended). 

To find your student's supply list, go to the Aurora Schools’ website homepage and then go to either the Parent Portal or Student Portal at the top of the page.  Scroll down to the School Supply Lists title to find each grade level listed and select.

The Ohio Senate has recently enacted Senate Bill 264 which exempts the purchase of clothing or school supplies under $75 from Ohio sales tax for three days in August 2016. Ohio’s “Sales Tax Holiday” will occur on August 5th (12:00 a.m.) - 7th (11:59 p.m.), 2016. 

During the holiday, the following items are exempt from sales and use tax:

  • Clothing priced at $75 per item or less;
  • School supplies priced at $20 per item or less; and 
  • School instructional material priced at $20 per item or less.

ARE YOU READY TO BE A SUPER SUMMER READER? ~ 3rd Graders

Be a super reader this summer!  Your assignment (for incoming 3rd graders in the fall) is to read at least 20 minutes per day on most days in the summer. Then complete the Super Reader Record that you can find at the link below.

Bring the completed journal back to school in the fall and return it to your new 3rd grade teacher at Leighton.  You will receive a Super Summer Reader prize.  This will also be your first reading grade of the new school year.

NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR

The Portage County Health Department has released the new vaccine requirements that might affect your child. 

Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year:

All students entering the 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine (also known as MCV4, Menveo or Menactra) in addition to one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, diptheria, and acellular pertussis).

All students entering the 12th grade will be required to have a 2nd dose of meningococcal vaccine prior to entry. If the first dose of MCV4 was administered on or after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.

Nurses from the Portage County Health Department will be at Miller School during Kindergarten Registration (March 8, 2016) and will administer immunizations to any student under the age of 18.

DISTRICT DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM ~ Resources Available Here

The Aurora PTO sponsored Drug Awareness & Prevention Program that was held on May 3, 2016 featured guest speakers knowledgeable about the growing drug epidemic seen locally and throughout the nation.  As a part of this program, several pamphlets and informational sheets were made available to attendees, including a moving, first-hand story from a mother, Danielle Smoot, whose son became addicted to drugs.  You can find them linked below.
