PINWHEEL DISPLAY AT AURORA POLICE DEPARTMENT PART OF APRIL CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH

The month of April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month across the country. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Portage County uses its Pinwheels for Prevention project as one of its activities to improve community response to child abuse and neglect. This year the Harmon School BETA Club is supporting the pinwheel awareness campaign.
The spinning pinwheels have been “planted” and are being displayed on the front lawn of the Aurora Police Department from April 18-25, 2013 for the 7th year in a row. They are intended to be a visual reminder to residents about the number of children affected by child abuse and neglect. The pinwheels are used to represent the caring individuals who break the silence surrounding child abuse and report suspicions of child abuse or neglect. This year the Harmon School BETA club is supporting the pinwheel awareness campaign.
To report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect, please call the 24-Hour Child Abuse Hotline (CARES) at 330-296-2273. For more information or to volunteer, please contact The Children’s Advocacy Center of Portage County at 330-297-8837.

AURORA CITY SCHOOLS SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM – SURVEY ATTACHED

The Aurora City School District, in conjunction with the City of Aurora, is participating in the Safe Routes to School program through the Ohio Department of Transportation. The goal of this program is to improve the environment around the school and encourage walking and bicycling to and from school. It expands the school’s curriculum and activities to include safety and education programs that teach pedestrian and bicycling safety.
We need the help of our parents to help create a school travel plan and the information we receive will help us to develop it. We need the parents of students in grades K-8 to complete the two-page questionnaire to let us know about how their children travel to and from school, what barriers there are to walking or biking to and from school, and your attitudes about walking and biking to school. Please take the 5 – 10 minutes needed to fill out the Parent Survey linked below and return it by October 1, 2012 to your child’s school office or send them back directly as a PDF.
