HARMON 6TH GRADE WATER PROJECT LOOKING FOR PARENT/COMMUNITY SUPPORT Water Splash Logo

The Harmon School 6th grade teachers have created a unique learning experience focusing on engaging their students in understanding and empathizing with others around the world.  With that global focus in mind, they came up with one subject that could connect all of their student’s subjects together, WATER.

The student’s interdisciplinary study of water in all of their subjects, English, Math, Social Studies and Science, will culminate the last few days of school in May with students experiencing first-hand the challenges and importance of clean drinking water.  On Wednesday, May, 25th, 6th graders will be asking for donations to support how many times they can walk around the AHS track carrying gallon jugs of water to simulate the experience from the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park.  The money donated from the students and the local community will be donated to Water.org, a global organization who has empowered more than 43 million people with access to safe water or sanitation.

During their last week of school, students will also be hearing from speakers including the City of Aurora’s Civil Engineer and others from the Tinkers Creek and Chagrin River Watershed Partners.  The 6th grade teachers are reaching out to community members who might be able to offer some educational experiences or support to their students.  Any parents or community members who may be willing to share personal or professional experiences to help educate and support the student’s experience relating to the water topic would be greatly welcomed and are asked to please contact Laurie Schofield-Carter at (lschofield@aurora-schools.org) or Karen Sunderhaft (ksunderhaft@aurora-schools.org).
