Aurora City School District Behavior Specialist Services

The Behavior Specialist Services team provides targeted expertise and support to address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students across the district. Behavior Specialists work collaboratively with educators, administrators, families, and related service providers to promote positive behavioral outcomes, foster student engagement, and ensure that students are able to access their educational programming within safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.

Behavior Specialist Services play a critical role in supporting the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) processes, and the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Services are provided for general education students, students receiving special education services under IDEA, and students receiving accommodations under Section 504.

Services may include:

  • Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) to analyze student behaviors, identify underlying causes, and guide intervention planning
  • Development and implementation of individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) aligned with IEP, 504, or MTSS frameworks
  • Direct consultation with classroom teachers and educational teams to design proactive behavioral strategies and supports
  • Data collection, analysis, and progress monitoring of behavioral interventions
  • Crisis prevention and de-escalation planning, training, and response support
  • Collaboration with school counselors, school psychologists, administrators, and outside mental health providers
  • Professional development and staff training on behavior management, trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning, and PBIS implementation
  • Support for classroom management strategies and school-wide behavior systems
  • Participation on IEP, 504, and MTSS problem-solving teams to ensure behavior is addressed within legally compliant educational plans
  • Parent collaboration, training, and coaching to ensure consistency of behavioral supports between home and school
  • Assistance with development of safety plans and reentry plans following behavioral incidents

Behavior Specialists work closely with district leadership to promote the use of evidence-based behavioral interventions that prevent problem behaviors, reinforce positive student behaviors, and increase student engagement across all learning environments. Services are designed to support both individual students with intensive behavioral needs and entire school communities through systems-level planning.
