Mental Health Counseling Services

Aurora City School District Mental Health Counseling Services

Mental Health Counseling Services provide school-based therapeutic support for students who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges that may interfere with their academic achievement, social relationships, or overall well-being. These services are designed to promote positive mental health, emotional regulation, resilience, and coping skills, while ensuring students can fully engage in the educational environment.

The district’s mental health professionals collaborate closely with students, families, teachers, and administrators to ensure a coordinated system of supports tailored to each student's individual needs. Services may be provided as part of general education supports, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), or as related services within a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.

Services may include:

Individual Counseling

  • Short-term, solution-focused counseling to address emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, social skills, and coping strategies
  • Therapeutic interventions targeting specific mental health concerns that impact academic and social functioning
  • Support for students with significant mental health diagnoses in coordination with outside treatment providers

Group Counseling

  • Structured small group interventions focused on peer relationships, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, social skills, or anger management
  • Targeted skill-building groups that support behavioral and emotional development

Crisis Intervention & Prevention

  • Immediate response and support during mental health crises, including suicide ideation, threat assessments, and grief counseling
  • Development of safety plans and coordination of re-entry planning following hospitalization or extended mental health absences
  • Participation on district crisis response teams

Consultation & Collaboration

  • Ongoing consultation with teachers, administrators, intervention teams, and families to support student success
  • Collaboration with community mental health providers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and outside agencies to ensure continuity of care
  • Support for parents and caregivers through education, resource connection, and counseling referrals

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

  • Participation in Tier 1 (universal), Tier 2 (targeted), and Tier 3 (intensive) mental health interventions as part of the district’s MTSS framework
  • Monitoring of student progress and adjustment of interventions based on data and team decision-making

Staff Support and Training

  • Professional development for staff on mental health topics such as trauma-informed care, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, de-escalation, and social-emotional learning (SEL)
  • Collaboration with district PBIS and SEL teams to promote positive school climate and wellness

Legal and Ethical Compliance

  • Delivery of counseling services within the guidelines of professional licensure, confidentiality, informed consent, and federal privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA)
  • Alignment with Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services (OhioMHAS), and district policies

Mental Health Counseling Services are an essential component of the district’s comprehensive approach to whole-child education, ensuring that each student has access to the emotional and behavioral supports necessary for academic growth and personal well-being.
