School Psychology Services

Aurora City School District School Psychology Services

The School Psychology Department provides comprehensive evaluation, consultation, and intervention services to support the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral success of students. School psychologists serve a vital role in both special education and general education settings, collaborating with educational teams, administrators, families, and community providers to ensure that students' educational needs are met in the least restrictive environment.

School psychologists integrate expertise in mental health, learning, behavior, and educational systems to address a wide range of student needs. They work proactively within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) frameworks to help schools create positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.

Services may include:

Psychoeducational Evaluations

  • Conduct comprehensive Evaluation Team Reports (ETRs) to determine eligibility for special education services under IDEA disability categories (e.g., Specific Learning Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Autism, Other Health Impairment, Intellectual Disability, and others)
  • Perform cognitive, academic, behavioral, social-emotional, adaptive, and functional assessments
  • Participate in eligibility determinations for Section 504 Plans

Consultation and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with teachers, intervention teams, administrators, related service providers, and families to support academic achievement and behavioral success
  • Support the development and implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and 504 accommodation plans
  • Assist in the design of evidence-based instructional and behavioral interventions

Mental Health and Social-Emotional Support

  • Identify and address social-emotional, mental health, and behavioral needs that may impact student learning
  • Provide short-term counseling or skill-building interventions for students experiencing challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, social skills deficits, or behavioral regulation
  • Consult with outside mental health agencies and service providers as part of a coordinated system of care

Behavioral Intervention Support

  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) to identify the causes of challenging behaviors and design targeted Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • Collaborate with behavior specialists and intervention teams to support students with significant behavioral needs

Crisis Prevention and Response

  • Serve as key members of school crisis response teams
  • Provide risk assessments and support for suicide prevention, threat assessments, and school safety planning
  • Support staff and students during and after critical incidents

Systems-Level Services

  • Support district-wide MTSS implementation, progress monitoring, data-based decision making, and staff professional development
  • Provide leadership in PBIS teams, data analysis, and school climate initiatives
  • Participate in program evaluation, strategic planning, and policy development to strengthen educational supports district-wide

Legal Compliance and Professional Ethics

  • Maintain compliance with IDEA, Section 504, the Ohio Operating Standards for the Education of Children with Disabilities, and district policies
  • Adhere to the ethical and professional standards of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and Ohio state licensure requirements

School psychology services are essential to ensuring that all students have access to a safe, supportive, and effective educational environment where academic learning and social-emotional development are fostered.
